Why Play All Night?
I had one goal I wrote Play All Night: to create the kind of book I’d want to read about my favorite band, the Allman Brothers Band. It’s a book for the hardcores who’ve spun At Fillmore East a million times and for newcomers who just want to know what makes this band so timeless.
Like here at Long Live the ABB, I sought to capture the essence of the Allman Brothers Band story—their music, their culture, how Southern history shaped them and how they, in turn, shaped Southern culture.
Writing this book pushed me to think about what makes a great story. What do we love about certain books? What keeps us turning the pages?
It’s the same kind of creative drive Duane had when he insisted the band record At Fillmore East live, on their own terms, on the most important stage in rock.
He wanted the music to be real, raw, and undeniably theirs.
That’s what I aimed for too—to write with my own voice, not for academics, but for anyone who loves great stories and iconic music.
If that sounds like something you or someone on your list would enjoy, grab a copy. (Or two.)
Long Live the ABB: Conversation from the Crossroads
A Blog for the Hardcores and the Curious
Now, if you’ve already read Play All Night, you know it’s just the beginning. Here at Long Live the ABB: Conversations from the Crossroads of Southern Music, History, and Culture, I’m constantly exploring deeper stories about the Allman Brothers Band.
I share insights into how historians interpret and reconstruct the past, using stories about the band and the ways their music connects to larger cultural moments.
I call it a conversation because that’s exactly what it is—an ongoing exploration of how the Allman Brothers Band shaped music and culture, and how their legacy continues to resonate today. It is a distinctly Southern story that has resonance worldwide.
